Enough With Halloween Already
Starting around Halloween last year, when Benjamin was about two and a half, he started getting very excited about holidays, or special days. His excitement for special days rejuvenated my love for them also. It meant that Christmas was special, Mother’s Day, and of course, Father’s Day. Even though this will be my third Father’s Day, this one feels like the start of the real deal. Benjamin is excited to make me a card. He talks about getting me some treats and toys for “Papa’s Day” as he calls it.
Benjamin’s excitement for Father’s Day also meant that when I told him that we were going to go and get our haircut, so we looked like “a couple of handsome boys” for Father’s Day he was excited! He also talked in great length about whether or not the “haircut store” would have lollipops… and spoiler alert: they did!
Just seeing him get excited about getting me something that he wants, is all I could ever ask for. The best part of this is that this is the first time we’ve received a haircut at the same time.
Leaving haircuts to the last minute has become a bit of a sport for me.
So a little bit of my history with haircuts. Leaving haircuts to the last minute has become a bit of a sport for me. It’s like, I go for a month without looking in the mirror and then one day I catch a glimpse of myself and decide then and there that I need a haircut. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and told we were next up, no waiting! The friendly staff told us that we could get our haircuts at the same time. However, Benjamin felt a little bit nervous and want me to stand beside him and hold my hand. Who could say no to that!
After Benjamin’s haircut, it was my turn. Now, most people probably have never noticed, but my head is quite small. The only reason my head looks so big is that I have 38 inches of hair on top of it. So I always feel bad when people have to cut my hair. However, this wasn’t an issue for my stylist. She was able to tame my mop-like hair and get it looking great for Father’s Day!
Kind Words of Encouragement
Now, are you wondering what Benjamin was doing while I was getting my haircut? I think the expression is, “monkey see, monkey do”? Benjamin was standing right beside me, giving me the same words of encouragement that I gave him just a few moments earlier.
“You’re doing great Papa” and “Don’t worry, the buzzer only tickles for a second.”

Now that we are a family of four, it’s nice to spend this one-on-one time with Benjamin, getting our haircuts. One-on-one time is something I would like to do more often.
